Send money home for less
The fee is only half the price. The exchange rate you are given is the other half.
Key facts
- The true cost of a transfer is the fee plus the gap between the provider's rate and the mid-market rate shown on our Today page.
- Three families of services: your bank or a Moroccan bank's branch abroad, online transfer apps, and cash networks with pick-up counters.
- The recipient can be paid into a bank account, in cash at a counter such as Wafacash, Cash Plus or Barid Cash, or on a mobile wallet.
Steps
- Decide the amount in your currency, then ask each service one question: how many dirhams arrive?
- Compare at least three services on the same day. The World Bank's Remittance Prices Worldwide site lists costs by country.
- Check the delivery time and whether the recipient pays anything to collect.
- Keep the receipt until the money has arrived.
Watch out
- A transfer advertised with zero fees usually earns its money on the rate.
- Rates offered at weekends and on holidays are often worse.
- Sending a larger amount less often costs less than many small transfers.
- Avoid informal couriers. If the money disappears, you have no proof and no recourse.
