Power of attorney

For property, only a deed drawn up by a notary, an adoul or an authorised lawyer is accepted.

Checked: October 2026

Key facts

  • Since 14 September 2017, the land registry rejects any property transaction based on a private power of attorney, even one legalised at a town hall.
  • For other matters, such as collecting a document or handling a file, your signature can be legalised at the consulate.
  • A power of attorney for a car that is not in your name must be legalised where the owner lives abroad, or at the consulate.

Steps

  1. Write down exactly what the person may do, on which property or file, and until when.
  2. For property, have it drawn up by adouls at the consulate or by a notary.
  3. Send the original to Morocco and keep a copy.

What to bring

  • Your CNIE and consular registration
  • Full identity of the person you appoint, with their CNIE number
  • References of the property: land title number and address

Watch out

  • A general power of attorney lets someone sell or mortgage in your name. Give a specific one, limited in time.
  • Cancel it in writing as soon as the job is done.
