Protect what you own from afar
Empty homes and undivided inheritances are the usual targets of fraud. A few habits close the door.
Key facts
- Property fraud relies on forged powers of attorney and forged deeds. This is why private powers of attorney are no longer accepted for property.
- ANCFCC runs an alert service, Mohafadati, that warns the owner when something is filed on a land title.
- An inheritance left undivided for years blocks sales and feeds family disputes.
Steps
- Register unregistered land. A land title is the strongest protection there is.
- Sign up for the alert service on each of your titles.
- Pay local taxes every year and keep the receipts: they are proof of possession.
- After a death, settle the inheritance quickly with a notary or adouls and register each heir's share.
Watch out
- Cancel old powers of attorney in writing.
- Do not leave original deeds with a caretaker or a distant relative.
- If something has been filed on your title without you, see a lawyer immediately. Deadlines to contest are short.
